What

Looking
for a driver?
Manufacturers
of hardware & software usually post
upgrades, bug fixes, patches, drivers
& updates on their sites. If you know
the manufacturer of the product go to our
help index
page and look for the
link to "All Major IT
companies".
The
main driver download sites are:
Driver
Zone
Driver zone has an easy to use
interface, drivers sorted alphabetically
and by product. Open to all.
DriversHQ
Useful, open to all, but frame based (so
you can't bookmark a page within the
site). Worth a visit anyway. Includes
free "driver detective"
software to find your current driver
versions.
CNET
Probably the most updated site. Easy to
use, organised by product, and open to
all.
Windrivers
Sometimes slow site, but well organised
and quite up to date. Open to all. Not
frames based.
Helpdrivers
Spanish, English, French and German
language support for driver downloads.
Links to home pages, ftp pages and
driver pages for most major
manufacturers. Worth visiting.

What
are Device Drivers?
Drivers
are pieces of software that act as an interface between
the operating system and the devices/hardware that makes
up a PC. It enables the components to ‘understand’
each other and work together.
Drivers
are usually specific to a particular device and to a
particular operating system. Very often operating
systems have built in drivers for many devices. This is
especially true of devices like optical drives
(CDs/DVDs/CDRWs).
Most
manufacturers are constantly updating the drivers for
their products and very often you can improve the
performance of a device or increase its functionality by
downloading the latest driver for it.
Your
first bet for driver downloads is invariably the website
of the manufacturer of that particular device. Some of
the manufacturer sites and be a nightmare to navigate to
it is useful that there are several sites that are
geared solely to finding you the driver you are looking
for. Please use the links above.
