Do our PCs really perform better? You decide

Document originally written: November 2000

When it comes to the crunch, when it comes to producing computers that perform, Best Price Computers Ltd comes out tops. Quality parts, superior technical skills and attention to detail combine to ensure that our computers put all competitors in the shade - by a wide margin. But don't take our word for it. We will produce here results of tests carried out by various PC magazines. Read and analyse them; then decide.

To appreciate these tests results and make fair comparisons you need to have some facts on the tests themselves.

  • Tests like Winbench and Winstone, Disk Winmark and 3D Winmark have been designed by the ZDNet Group of Companies and are used by magazines like PC Direct and PC Magazine (and others) to compare performance of PCs. The below sample of tests were performed by PC Direct magazine.
  • It is unfair to compare scores from one PC running NT with another PC running Windows 98 SE/ME. NT does score higher on tests like Winstone because NT is more efficient at executing 32 bit applications. You need to compare like for like and we have therefore not reproduced any results where we've got a higher score purely because we had a different operating system.
  • Again, to ensure a level playing field, there are some rules that all companies submitting PCs should follow. Companies can't "overclock" their PCs, nor can they use programs like "Ramdisk" to artificially boost scores.

Disclaimer: The specs of the PCs submitted for the group tests differed widely. The Disk Winmark scores measuring how the hard disk performs is only one of several tests run on the PCs. The charts on this page are not the complete results of all the tests. Visit PC Direct's website for full details & results of any of the tests below.

How we rate on Disk Winmark scores:

PC Direct 08/00

PC Direct 09/00

PC Direct 12/00

PC Direct 01/01

The 9830 score above is the highest ever IDE disk Winmark score published in the UK as of the date this page was created (Nov 2000). How about this for a prediction: When that score is beaten in the UK it will be by one of our own Poweroid computers. If you want performance you can't afford to buy your PC anywhere else.

But hard disks tell only a small part of the story. What about other scores? Is it just disk scores that we are good at? No, we've proved that we build some of the best PCs in the UK.

PC Direct's Group Test, 02/00 issue

Below is a collection of the typical range of tests a magazine runs on the PCs that have entered the group test*.

The brief for the below tests was business computer systems within a target price of £799 + vat. Dell, Gateway and Tiny were some of the manufacturers who supplied computers for this test. See how they perform against our high performance beasts. We produce the summary results here.

Note: At the same price point as everyone else (£799 + vat) our computer was the only one that also had a CD ReWriter and a full Office Suite package. You just can't beat that for value. Product information
