Hard
disk speeds are important because they affect the total speed of the
PC by an enormous amount. Having a really fast hard disk, in many
cases, will give you more of a performance boost than doubling the
RAM/memory. Disk Winmark scores are used for measuring hard disk speeds.
This test is used by companies like PC Direct, PC Magazine and
others in the Zdnet group. No matter how good the hard
disk, if it isn't configured and set up correctly it won't perform
to its best.
UDMA
hard disks around the 20-45 GB size (5400 rpm or 7200 rpm) tend to
score between 4000 and 5000 on the Disk Winmark. If a manufacturer
scores less than 4000 we believe they've got serious problems, and
need new, properly qualified engineers fast.
We have consistently scored above the 8000
mark. In fact we've scored as high as 9830
(see below). We believe this to be a world record as of the date
this page was written.
But
it's not a one off. In all PC
Direct's tests (for example), through the entire year of 2000, if
you average the test results we still have the highest scores. And by a HUGE margin.
So it's not a one-off. Now that we've established that we know
what we are talking about - how do we get these great scores? And
how can you do it without cheating?
